Welcome
Athlone Farm yarns are made from the fleece of our happy, healthy llamas and alpacas. I create yarn you can feel good about using in your projects. Here on the farm we have 7 alpacas (5 suris and 2 huacayas) and 9 rescue llamas who gladly donate their winter coats each spring. Our animals are in no way harmed by shearing. An annual haircut is necessary to give them relief from the summer heat and keep their skin and fiber healthy. Additional fleece is supplied by the beautiful herd at Eden View Llamas and two select local alpaca farms.
My yarns are soft, natural, hand-produced, and never treated with
harsh chemicals. I start with raw fleece and wash, card or comb,
dye, and spin all yarn entirely by hand. Any dyes used are natural
and vegetable based, many of them obtained from plants grown on
the farm. Llama and alpaca fleece is naturally soft, lustrous,
and very warm. Athlone two-ply yarns knit or crochet beautifully
into all kinds of garments and are excellent for weaving.
In addition to yarn, I also offer limited amounts of hand-woven goods and accessories. Most of my products are made with at least 50% handspun yarn and display all of the soft texture, beauty, and durability of llama and alpaca fleece. At any given time I may have scarves, shawls, coverlets, purses and evening bags for sale in the online store. If you prefer to see and feel the yarn in person please stop by and see me from 7am-noon on Saturday mornings at the Waverly 32nd Street Farmer's Market in Baltimore City.
Please inquire about custom spinning and weaving services. I'll be happy to spin or weave items for you from fleece I have or hand or I'll work with you to design and create something beautiful from your favorite llama or alpaca's fiber.
E-mail me with your questions. I'm always happy to discuss llamas, alpacas, and fiber arts.
